At half past six p.m., November 30, a famous expert of philosophy history and the commissary of Chinese national culture college expert institution Pro.Yu Dunkang had given a lecture in the name of Zhou Yi and Management Decision for EMBA students of Financial Class in 2006.SJTU in Chinese Academy of Social Science. This is a part of the teaching plan in November for the students.

During the two-hour lecture, Pro.Yu Dunkang had shared his ideas of many years study of Zhou Yi with the students, by the manner of combining the narrative of philosophers east and west with the current social reality. He pointed out, Zhou Yi is the only one that can represent at thousands of years culture of China in all of the classical books. He sited the words by Mr.Feng Youlan, a philosopher, ‘Zhou Yi, is the subject of spirit phenomenon in nation of China.’

In the lecture, Pro.Yu Dunkang began his speech with The Western Wisdom by Henry Norris Russell and then analyzed the wisdom in Chinese classical culture. He reckoned that Analects of Confucius and Lao-tzu were only a part of Chinese people’s wisdom, for Chinese culture had a history of more than two thousand five hundred years. Sun Tzu's Art of War could also not represent the whole Chinese culture, for our nation was fond of peace, not war. After explaining the process of finishing Zhou Yi, Pro.Yu concluded that Zhou Yi was what the national wisdom had stood on.

Pro.Yu considered that the key of Zhou Yi’s wisdom was harmony. He said, ‘Confucius represented harmonious relations with people; Taoists’ was natural harmony and Zhou Yi’s was the big harmony that contented the two above’. He fatherly pointed out that harmony was the key values of China. Then he introduced Zhou Yi’s development in history and pointed out that Zhou Yi was the main culture through Chinese feudal society. Because o the historical reason, traditional culture had subjected to twists and turns. But with the coming of summit of economic construction, the summit of rejuvenation of traditional culture was also coming. He considered that the rejuvenation of Chinese traditional culture must have returned to the key view of values, harmony. He said, “the Chinese government has laid down the strategy on harmony and enforcing its peaceful rejuvenation is one of the manifestation.”

When coming down to the phenomenon of superstition, Mr.Yu pointed out that the difference between superstition and art believed who could control our fate. He said, ‘even the intellectuals in ancient times didn’t believe foretelling but some in today actually believe it’. He viewed Zhou Yi as the key of Chinese national culture.

He also talked about his personal views on Zhou Yi functioned in management decision. He took the nation management for instance and pointed out that all theories east and west, in and abroad were based on the hypothesis on humanity. The styles of nation management were different because the hypothesis was different. Because of the different recognitions of humanity, management styles in the view of Confucius, Lao-tzu, Mencius, Xunzi and Hanfeizi were different. Zhou Yi’s management style is closer to Xunzi. The style weighed ethics and laws together.

The notion of national management by Zhou Yi has a clear realistic orientation of values. It is to pursue advantages and to avoid disadvantages. Another orientation is to achieve the aim that all the countries are all harmonious. So its theory and method to management the country are all based on them. Nowadays, the government has proposed the notion of establishing a harmonious society, which is a manifestation of it.

Mr.Yu emphasized at last the notion of harmony we’ve insisted was also the key notion of Zhou Yi. It was a most important notion and should be carried out in all aspects of society.

The atmosphere during the lecture was so warm that Mr. Yu’s knowledgeable and humorous talking earned much applause. Many students said, through the lecture, they had totally new recognition of Zhou Yi and would take further study with their management work.

Students in 2006 fall Class 3 and some of the students in 2005, Beijing also attended the lecture.
